Planning for a surprise proposal?
Here is a guide to help you measure ring size for a surprise proposal.
Finding out the perfect ring size of your partner is just as important as picking out the perfect engagement ring. We have created a simple guide to help you find their accurate ring size, in a discrete manner.
Key things to know when discretely trying to find out the ring size:
First and foremost, be confident in which finger you should be sizing. Traditionally, the engagement ring is for the fourth finger on the left hand. It is believed that the ring finger on the left hand has the “vein of love” which connects directly to the heart.
At Trellis by Elyana, we recommend using 18K gold for all our custom-made jewelry. When it comes to bespoke jewelry for engagement rings, it is important to choose a metal that is easier to resize. 18K gold is a beautiful choice for an engagement ring and is more valuable in comparison to other metals.
All our engagement rings are set in 18K Gold. Resizing our engagement rings would take around 3-5 working days, additional costs may apply.
Now finally, the last step, finding out the ring size.
Ring sizes are determined based on the inner circumference of the ring. Different countries have slightly different ways of interpreting this size.
At Trellis by Elyana, the ring sizes mentioned on our website follow the US ring measurement scale. We mainly work with the US and HK size ring measurement scale.
Different ways to measure ring size discretely and accurately:
Measuring with a ring sizer tape measure
- Wrap the ring sizer tape around your partner’s finger.
- Adjust the tape until it feels comfortable.
- Mark the size indicate don the tape measure, where it overlaps.

Trace and sneak
Borrow one of their own rings and trace the inner and outer circles so we can help estimate the ring size.
Ask a friend
Casually ask a family member or a friend to bring up the topic of rings and sizes to your partner. That way you will also be able to find out their preference.
Be sneaky
Try on one of their current rings onto your finger, and mark how far it goes. When you speak to a jeweler, they will help you determine the size.
