Why Oval Diamonds Suit Wedding Rings
The oval is one of the most requested diamond shapes for wedding rings, and for good reason.
It uses a brilliant facet pattern, so it delivers fire and sparkle close to a round cut. Its elongated outline also makes fingers look longer and slimmer.
Ovals spread their carat weight across a larger surface than a round diamond. A one carat oval often looks noticeably bigger on the hand than a one carat round.
With no sharp points or corners, the shape is also practical. It is less prone to chipping, which makes it a strong choice for rings worn every day.
Lab grown diamonds add further value. They are chemically, physically and optically identical to mined diamonds, so your budget can go towards a larger stone or a better colour grade.

Oval Wedding Ring Styles at Trellis
Full and Semi Eternity Bands
Oval eternity bands are among our most popular wedding rings.
- Oval Cut Eternity Band: ovals set all the way around for unbroken sparkle from every angle.
- Castle Set Oval Eternity: each oval held in a raised castle setting that lets more light into the stones.
- Semi Eternity Oval Cut: ovals across the top half only, which keeps the underside smooth and makes resizing far easier.
Semi eternity bands are often the more practical choice for daily wear, while full eternity bands give the most luxurious finish.
Oval Solitaires and Halo Rings
For a centre stone design, the Oval Solitaire Engagement Ring keeps the setting simple and lets the diamond lead.
Halo and hidden halo styles add extra brilliance. The Royal Oval Halo frames the centre stone in a visible ring of diamonds, while the Luxe Oval Hidden Halo places that ring beneath the stone, so it shows only from the side.
Explore these and more in our engagement rings collection.
Ovals With Accent Stones
Ovals pair naturally with other shapes. Trellis of Brilliance sets an oval centre between two pear cut diamonds, and the Oval Greek Garnet design adds a band of marquise accents for a more detailed look.
Comparing Oval Ring Styles
| Style | Look | Comfort | Resizing | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full eternity | Continuous sparkle | Smooth, sits low | Difficult | A luxurious standalone band |
| Semi eternity | Sparkle on top only | Very comfortable | Easier | Everyday wear and stacking |
| Castle set eternity | Raised, light filled stones | Slightly higher profile | Difficult | Maximum brilliance |
| Oval solitaire | Clean and classic | Moderate | Easy | A timeless single stone |
| Hidden halo | Sparkle seen from the side | Moderate | Easy | Subtle extra detail |
How to Choose an Oval Diamond
Not every oval looks the same. These points help you compare stones.
Length to width ratio. Most buyers prefer a ratio between 1.30 and 1.50. A lower ratio looks fuller and softer. A higher ratio looks slimmer and more elongated on the finger.
The bow tie effect. Many ovals show a darker band across the centre. A small, soft bow tie is normal and adds contrast. A dark, heavy one dulls the stone, so always view the diamond in person or on video.
Symmetry. Both halves of the oval should mirror each other, with smooth, even curves.
Colour and clarity. Ovals show colour slightly more than rounds, especially at the ends. A higher colour grade keeps the stone bright in white gold.
Every centre stone we offer is independently graded. Learn more about our IGI certified solitaires before you choose.
Building an Oval Ring Stack
An oval engagement ring has no points, so it sits comfortably beside most straight bands. That makes it one of the easiest shapes to stack.
Popular combinations include:
- Oval solitaire with an oval eternity band for a matching, coordinated look.
- Oval halo with a slim pavé band to keep the focus on the centre stone.
- Oval solitaire with a mixed shape band for a modern, layered stack.
You can also set an oval east west, turned horizontally across the finger, for a contemporary twist. Browse more partner bands in our wedding bands collection.
Metal Options
All Trellis wedding rings are made in solid 18K gold.

Bespoke Oval Wedding Rings
Our bespoke service lets you create an oval ring around your exact preferences. Choose the ratio, carat size, setting style, metal and any personal engraving.
A custom band shaped to sit flush with an existing engagement ring is a common request. The process typically takes around three weeks once the design is finalised.

Neither is better; they suit different tastes. A round cut offers the most sparkle, while an oval gives similar brilliance with a larger look and a more elongated outline.
